TRAIN ALL SAPS OFFICIALS IN GBV

- Minister Cele committed to training 4500 police officers to address gender-based violence (GBV) [1], we want to know if this training has been completed?
- There are 193,000 police officers in our country [2], training less than 3% is not enough if we are to really address GBV. We call on Minister Cele to make a public commitment to train at least 50% of police officers to address GBV, in 2020.
- Finally, when it comes to the GBV training, the Minister must partner with social justice organisations in monitoring and evaluating the training to promote transparency and accountability.

Why is this important?

The Annual Crime Statistics recorded 52920 sexual offences during the period of 2018/19. "Ninety percent of victims of sexual violence above the age of 10 were female. An alarming 46.5% of victims of sexual assault were children" [3].

The new statistics in June 2020 revealed by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko showed that 5082 cases of GBV have been opened at police stations across Gauteng province. However, only 3373 arrests have been made with 204 resulting in convictions.

If enough of us come together, and add our names to this petition now, we can amplify the collective power of ordinary people and hold SAPS accountable for their conduct, as well as for investigation of GBV-related crimes.

After much deliberation and thought, #TrainThemAll has recruited activists interested in driving social change - they will be assisting with the process of turning the campaign into an accredited manual directed at concientising SAPS officials.

With that said, please note that social media accounts have been created to generate stories of ALL genders where they suffered incompetence at the hands of SAPS; whose cases went cold as a direct result of the conduct of the SAPS; who have been DENIED JUSTICE! The stories will be used to build an evidence-based approach. If there is a question about confidentiality, please tell the Admin of the Page to withhold your identity, however, ALL stories will be verified to ensure that we are speaking truth to power.

The number of missing women recorded the past 3 years is equivalent and perhaps even more than the number of police officials to receive GBV Sensitivity Training.
