A Centenary of Insurrection and Massacre – a View from UJ’s Mountain

100 years ago, in 1922, white miners rebelled against mining capitalism in the Rand Revolt. The critical battle took place on soil below the Bunting Road Campus and on the Vrederdorp Koppie above. This brief visit to the site where miners were massacred provides a wide vista of the City of Gold, and is reminiscent of the famous koppie in Marikana. Follow the kombies leaving from Bunting Campus, or join us at the open land by New Nation School.

UJ events are organised by the South African Research Chair in Social Change, Centre for Social Change and Centre for Sociological Research and Practice, with support from Community Organising Working Group and Marikana Solidarity Campaign.
