A symposium reflecting on the legacy of the Marikana massacre and the future of socio-economic justice in South Africa.

On August 20th at Constitution Hill – the site of South Africa’s highest court – in Johannesburg, South Africa, we are hosting an in-person one-day symposium on the legacies of the 16 August 2012 Marikana massacre. Full program and bios of speakers is posted at the end of this description. 2022 marks a decade since the Marikana Massacre.

Highlights of the symposium are a public event featuring high-profile speakers - Ronnie Kasrils, a former freedom fighter and government minister serving under Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki; and Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, one of the country’s leading psychologists and an expert on violent histories and transgenerational trauma. Will Shoki, our staff writer, will chair that panel.
