Western Cape Education Crisis Committee's Petition Against Teacher Job Cuts

* [Campaign Update]: In December 2024, a day before 2407 teacher posts were to be terminated, the Special Action Committee for Education (SAC) appeared in court, where an urgent interdict application was heard. Read more here: https://tinyurl.com/2fv9yvvf. The appeal was rejected. The petition was also presented to NEDLAC in a negotiation meeting with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) last year. The SAC will continue with the litigation route to halt the cuts.

We the undersigned object to the planned cut of 2,407 teaching posts at the beginning of the school year in 2025, by WCED. We demand that the National Treasury, Western Cape Provincial Government and WCED find the money for these teaching posts.

Why is this important?

We cannot afford any cuts in our Education budget, in fact we, as the Western Cape Education Crisis Committee, want more money and resources to be allocated to ensure Free Good Quality Decolonized Education.

"Godongwana did not mention the issue of teacher posts. There has been no increase in the provincial equitable share for 2024/25 and no increase in funds allocated to absorb cost-of-living adjustments for health or education. This means the provinces have no choice but to keep their education budgets the same for this year, unless they decide to reallocate funds internally"
