Pemmy Majodina, Employ War on Leaks Graduates Now!
We call on the Minister of Water and Sanitation, the CEO of Rand Water, and Municipal Managers to work together to address the ongoing unemployment of qualified War on Leaks graduates.
Thousands of young South Africans completed the War on Leaks Programme with the expectation of gaining practical experience and contributing to improving water services. Many graduates remain unemployed despite having valuable skills, while communities continue to experience water losses, leaking infrastructure, and service delivery challenges.
We respectfully call on the decision-makers to:
- Engage with representatives of War on Leaks graduates.
- Review the employment outcomes of the War on Leaks Programme.
- Create transparent and fair opportunities for practical workplace experience.
- Consider qualified graduates for suitable vacancies and infrastructure projects within municipalities and the water sector.
- Develop a coordinated plan to better utilise the skills of trained War on Leaks graduates in improving South Africa's water services.
By taking these steps, the responsible institutions can strengthen water service delivery while expanding opportunities for qualified graduates to contribute their skills in the public interest.
Why is this important?
Thousands of South Africans enrolled in the War on Leaks Programme to gain skills that would help protect our country's water resources and improve local service delivery. Many graduates successfully completed their training and are ready to contribute, yet a significant number say they have not had access to practical workplace opportunities or employment related to the programme. At the same time, many communities continue to experience water leaks, ageing infrastructure and water losses.
