#LehaeLibraryMustOpen

The community of Lehae in Johannesburg South was promised a library handover in December 2016. This promise has been repeatedly broken in the last 5 years and the library structure remains idle while resources continue to be allocated for it. We demand the opening of the Lehae Library so that community members can access all library services for the promotion of education, a safe learning environment, access to the internet and job/skills opportunities.

Why is this important?

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Lehae Youth Club calls on community members to sign and share our online petition to get the Lehae library open for public use. We are seeking accountability for the massive delay in opening the structure that has been built for years without being used by the community. We stand firm against corruption and mismanagement, because it us as the community that suffers the most.
This library, just like the taxi rank, sports complex and clinic have been abandoned by those responsible for maintenance and operations. These infrastructure development projects are vital to the economic, health and educational growth of the Lehae community. The library in particular is key to supporting the educational and development needs of scholars and young professionals in the community. It further supports access to opportunities for job seekers and access to the internet which is a necessity for individual growth and success. The library provides an opportunity for learners to study in a safe environment instead of walking long distances to neighboring schools where the threat of violence is high. As young people we believe that such a building promotes access to important human rights. To ensure a safe space for learning and growth. In addition to promoting literacy, reading clubs, spaces where youth can engage in workshops and other learning opportunities, access to online materials and job opportunities, ability to create and find support for CV writing and much more.
We call on the Johannesburg Development Agency and local government officials to account for the misused funds and for the extreme delay in opening the library which is limiting the growth of the community.
