Release Karabo Tau, now

The ministry of police must ensure that 18-year-old Karabo Tau is released from prison immediately, she was wrongfully arrested for the abduction of a baby that is still yet to be found.

Why is this important?

The due process leading up to her arrest was not followed by the police. A family member states that Karabo was firstly humiliated and arrested at school with no warrant of arrest and then held for hours at the Harare police station (Khayelitsha) for interrogation without food, water or breaks which led to her writing the confession.

The lead detective Solomzi Ngunda also brought the complainant to Karabo’s home when he was collecting evidence (Karabo’s SIM card), which is unprofessional and is now resulting in threats to burn Karabo’s home down according to Karabo’s family.

The family also states that the detective took pictures off Karabo’s Facebook account to present to the complainant to positively identify Karabo as the suspect initially.

"The state prosecutor and the investigating officer don't care at all," Karabo’s lawyer Sulaiman Chothia said in an interview outside court.

Chothia went on to say "He (Detective Solomzi Ngunda) doesn't care two hoots whether my client is in custody or not...he's quite happy for an 18-year-old matric learner to spend another week in jail until February 3 when he comes back from wherever he is going to. So that is a sad state of affairs at the moment,"

It’s Karabo’s 12th day behind bars and 2 other detectives trying to assist the case confirmed to the family that the due process was not followed by the detective.

Justice does not begin in the courthouse, Karabo and her family deserve to be treated fairly and professionally. If we come together to help #FreeKarabo, we ensure that justice prevails and that our police do not simply find shortcuts in doing their jobs. The police must serve the public efficiently and objectively.
