The sugary drinks tax, formally known as the Health Promotion Levy, was adopted by the NCOP. It now needs President Jacob Zuma's signature!

SAMNET fully supports the government of South Africa’s commitment to implement a tax on sugary drinks as part of its ongoing drive to improve the health of its people and address the epidemic of non-communicable diseases.

Why is this important?

Our nation’s health is in crisis and Sugary drinks are one of the most significant contributors to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, liver and kidney damage, and some cancers that are on the rise globally and in South Africa.
