WE CALL FOR THE ERADICATION / UPROOTING OF RACISM AT TRINITYHOUSE HIGH

We call for:
•The creation of transparent and safe spaces for students and parents to hold conversations.
• A formal, inclusive and transparent approach to addressing these issues by those in the highest positions of power at the school. Issues of this nature should not be left to students to deal with. Many of these issues are the result of a system that is broken at its highest levels.
• Transparency and most importantly, accountability at all times, with recordings of proceedings to take place.
• Disciplinary action should be taken against teachers, staff members and students who implement discriminatory and racist policies or actions against students.
• Race and diversity workshops to be implemented to facilitate reform
• Training in awareness and sensitisation for cross-cultural integration for the staff.
• We call for the establishment of an independent committee comprised of existing
parent representatives, alumni, school management and staff representatives whose sole mandate will be to assist the school in handling these matters, for the sake of objectivity, as well as for the protection of students who bravely confront these issues.

Why is this important?

We, the former and current students of Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge, call for immediate action to be taken against systemic racism at the school. Current global #BlackLivesMatter protests have inspired students of colour to speak up about their experiences and what it means to be a Black student at a private school. Students were called to a disciplinary enquiry and this has since been retracted.
We stand in solidarity with these students and recognise that the existing discriminatory culture of the school creates and perpetuates a visibly unequal community.
Ours is a call to proactively identify and uproot racist and discriminatory systems within the school. We demand that school policies and practices be changed and that these changes should intentionally create awareness and safe spaces to allow the school to evolve. We hope for the school to develop and embrace a culture of equality and mutual respect.
With this petition, we call on the principal, Farone Eckstein, the executive staff members, teachers, other staff and the Advtech Group to commit to this deep transformation. They should allow students to freely engage with the management, address these issues and find solutions to every issue raised in order to achieve racial equality.
Trinityhouse promises
But if the existing school system prevents students from being fully recognised and respected for who they are, the school cannot deliver
on these promises.
We acknowledge that the school has implemented a channel of communication through which students can voice their concerns. This channel is a “democratically elected” student body.
We, the signers of this petition, do not consider this channel to be an effective or appropriate mechanism with which to deal with the serious allegations of systemic injustices at the school that have been raised by students of colour. This standpoint is supported by years-long experiences of injustice at the school. These experiences are now being brought to light by the stories, facts, experiences and accounts of the Alumni and students.

We the undersigned demand that these actions be taken against racism immediately at Trinityhouse High School
