To: President Cyril Ramaphosa

NPOs offer essential services, tell Pres Ramaphosa to fund them!

Compel the Department of Social Development, the Solidarity Fund and the Department of Health to provide financial support as agreed in engagements with the President.

In a meeting with NEDLAC and the social partners, the President committed to:

- Government to fast track financial support for civil society organisations including formations such as the Community Constituency Covid-19 Front and others.

- The Solidarity Fund to provide financial support for civil society organisations including faith-based organisations who have expressed a dire need.

- The Department of Social Development has been requested to speed up with its commitments to provide financial support to civil society. By doing this, the Department can be supported by active civil society organisations in communities to meet their commitments as per the disaster management plans.

Since the beginning of lockdown, many civil society organisations have been scrambling to provide services and support to the most vulnerable communities across South Africa, from securing and distributing food parcels to assistance with legal aid and resolution of human rights violations.

A structure like the Covid-19 Front, set up by the NEDLAC Community Trust and the SANAC Civil Society Forum has managed to mobilise thousands of civil society organisations to form:

- the only functional civil society Nerve Centre
- build a technology platform (www.thusasechaba.org.za) to assess community needs and galvanise support to meet those needs through advocacy, donations and social mobilisation
- screen and test for Covid-19 through partners in the healthcare sectors such as Pink Drive.
- mobilise thousands of community workers to be on-the-ground neighbourhood agents to provide much needed support to families at household level

All of this done in under 6 weeks with no financial support from government or its agencies. In order for work like this to yield even greater impact, alignment and funding with government efforts is needed urgently

Why is this important?

As the lockdown eases, many communities rely on NPOs for support when it comes to prevention, detection, and care for Covid-19 and other essential services such as HIV/Aids, chronic conditions, and psychosocial support.

NPOs aren't able to function because of necessary funds to do the lifesaving work that's needed in communities.
